I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Genovese from the Mass Communications field. The interview went over what type of writing can be expected in the Mass Communications field. It does not matter what career path you choose you will have to do some type of writing, and by interviewing Dr. Genovese I was able to get an idea about what kind of writing comes in the Communications path.
Dr. Genovese is a professor at Bloomsburg now so his writing is typically academic. Before becoming a professor he worked with a number of news stations. Most of the writing he did then was for the news, or what could be said for sport highlights. On a daily basis you would be expected to write news stories and their introductions. Occasionally you would be asked to write promotional items.
The purpose for which you would write obviously varies. Dr. Genovese writes to give an insight into a certain topic and hopefully have somebody take something out of it. In other cases one would have to write to inform their audience as to what is going on. In the Communications field informative writing can be very important. When Dr. Genovese wasn’t a professor he would write for a news audience. He also did sports writing in Philadelphia, so he wrote for Philadelphia sport fans. Presently he writes for academics and students.
An article that is admired by Dr. Genovese is: The Wayward Child: An Ideological Analysis of Contract Holdout Coverage by Ronald Bishop. Ronald Bishop does a good job in the article of looking past common assumptions. The article is about athletes holding out on contracts, and Dr. Genovese likes the way Mr. Bishop can look past the assumption of the athlete is doing it for more money. He likes how it gives another perspective, and it also gives research to improve sports journalism.
Dr. Genovese says you get satisfaction out of writing when you know it is high quality work. Writing is a way to not only express yourself, but also to improve the things you enjoy. I learned a lot from my interview, and know just how important writing can be. Writing can be the make or break in a career. A good writer will always have a place to work.
